Good Cause For Optimism
The Treatment Advocacy Center is often overcome with stories of preventable tragedies involving individuals with untreated mental illness.  As we know all too well, there are many people needlessly suffering.

Despite all the barriers that remain, there is good cause for optimism in the world of mental illness:

  • While there is no cure for schizophrenia, it is a highly treatable disorder. In fact, according to the National Advisory Mental Health Council, the treatment success rate for schizophrenia is comparable to the treatment success rate for heart disease.
  • New medications come out every year that could be more effective with fewer side effects. Researchers around the globe are making strides towards better treatment and cures for severe mental illnesses.
  • Many in the mental health community recognize the value of early intervention – before a crisis.

Let’s hope that as the New Year approaches, those around us continue to embrace the benefits of treatment and the path towards understanding of severe mental illnesses.
